Use the Dial, Not the Off Switch

For years I would go through this cycle…

Pay attention to fitness and nutrition…lose some weight.

Get comfortable with life…let fitness and nutrition habits dwindle.

Another life event…pay attention to fitness and nutrition…lose some weight.

Get comfortable with life…let fitness and nutrition habits dwindle.

Repeat.  A number of times over the years.

In 2015 I decided to make some dramatic life changes.

I quit my high-profile corporate job after 21+ years. It was no longer providing the challenge and reward I wanted in a career.

I began an assessment of all aspects of my life. My goal was to rebuild it with new energy and the positive components that I wanted during the second half of my life.

Given my struggle with the cycle above, fitness and nutrition were two of my early efforts.

I took the first several months off of work to get myself in shape physically and mentally.

I began learning the same great things we now coach in our programs.

It changed my way of thinking about fitness and nutrition.

As you begin making life changes…life still happens. There will be things thrown at you that aren’t in the plan.

Today I want to share a way to deal with this scenario.

Dial it up or down, but don’t turn it off.

In the attached graphics from Precision Nutrition, you can see options for Movement, Nutrition and Overall Wellness activities that revolve around a dial.

Notice…there is no off switch.

When getting to the gym isn’t an option…

  • dial up the Nutrition.
  • dial up the Overall Wellness.
  • dial down your Movement…try to not shut it off completely.

We all have different lives and different variables impacting these areas. Learning how to move the dial without having to turn it off comes with practice.

Experiment with options that work with your life and your interests.

These aren’t the only options either. They are guidelines to help you think about what might work for you.

It’s a lot harder to turn it back on than it is to just dial it back up.
