Balance.

What does that mean to you?

According to dictionary.com

noun

1.a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, etc.

2. something used to produce equilibrium; counterpoise.

3. mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior, judgment, etc.

At yoga yesterday my instructor chose balance as her theme of the session. With all of the chaos going on with hurricanes, earthquakes and everything else going on in the media she wanted us to focus on balance to share this with the greater good.

We physically worked on poses to find our own balance during the session. With my head cold I am fighting it was a tough one for me!

Finding balance each day can be challenging. We have a lot of obligations pulling us in many directions.

Sometimes it gets so crazy that finding balance isn’t possible so it gets pushed aside for a later time. For some, that time may never come.

So you find yourself out of balance and out of sorts. Things aren’t working as best as they could for you.

Maybe you don’t have the time or energy to figure out the bigger picture just yet. Here is a quick option to help you find a bit of breathing room each day.

Some of our ProCoach clients are practicing the 5-minute mind body scan. It’s pretty simple and can be done anywhere.

Take 5-minutes of quiet time…or whatever number of minutes you have…and sit still. Take a scan up or down your body and hone in on what your feeling physically, your feeling emotionally and what you’re thinking.

Where are you tense? Where do you have pains? Do you feel good? Energetic or sleepy?

Are you angry? Sad? Happy? Stressed? Overwhelmed?

Do you have a million things going through your head? Are those thoughts causing some of the feelings above?

It’s a simple way to become more aware of what’s going on with you in that moment. You can do this in the car if you have a few minutes to yourself. Take a short break with what your doing and focus on yourself.

Maybe take a few deep breaths and let go of some of the tension in your day. It won’t fix everything, but it’s a quick tool to find some focus…and maybe some balance.

While talking with a client last week, she started doing this as a part of her sleep ritual and throwing in some gratitude. What a great way to fall asleep!
