Have you ever established a word of the year? A few years ago I learned about this idea from a high school classmate. I found the concept refreshing and it helped me refocus the idea of a new year’s resolution to something more effective for me as I went through the year. This actions associated with the word lasted all year…unlike many past resolutions!!!
Last year I chose engage. I was a new health coach eager to continue learning and growing my coaching skills. I engaged with clients, other coaches, webinars, books and my certifications. Listening and learning from others helped me put what I was learning into perspective and real-world situations. I wanted to engage even more with clients as a result.
My word was also appropriate personally as I engaged with my family and friends. I stepped up my running game by engaging in training so that I could complete a half marathon. I also began my yoga practice that I had been talking about but not acting upon. It was a good start with a lot more to learn.
So for this year…I want to take all of these things to the next level by cultivating all the same areas plus a couple new ones.
Definition of cultivate:
- to develop or improve by education or training; train; refine.
- to promote the growth or development of (an art, science, etc.); foster.
- to devote oneself to (an art, science, etc.).
- to promote or improve the growth of (a plant, crop, etc.) by labor and attention.
First and foremost is to continue cultivating my coaching skills and helping clients foster their healthy habits. There will be a lot of opportunity to continue here.
Personally I want to run the Flying Pig Half and to continue my yoga practice. But new this year…I want to begin piano lessons. Tim bought me a keyboard for Christmas a few years ago that is just sitting there waiting for me. Interestingly enough…the habits I’ve learned through our coaching program has helped set the foundation for this new opportunity!
Finally, as a side note, I think about my lemon trees I’m cultivating as well. They started as three little seeds and now stand about 18 inches high. What’s in store for them this year?!?!
